What does Share of Voice mean?
Share of Voice is your portion of all brand mentions in the AI answers to your tracked prompts, counting every brand the engines name.
This article explains what Share of Voice (SoV) means in WriteWorks and how to read it. When an AI engine answers a prompt in your category, it usually names several brands. Share of Voice is your portion of those mentions across every tracked prompt.
SoV measures how much of the total brand conversation belongs to you. Each tracked prompt produces a response per engine, and every response may mention one or more brands. Each brand is counted once per response it appears in. Your SoV is the number of responses that mention you divided by the total brand appearances across all those responses, expressed as a percentage.
On the Overview page, the total includes every brand the engines named, not only the competitors you track, so your slice reflects the whole competitive field. The Competitors page compares you only against the competitors you have added.
Here is a worked example to make it concrete
- Your tracked prompts produce 100 responses over 30 days.
- Your brand appears in 30 of them, Competitor A in 25, Competitor B in 25, and other brands the engines named account for 20 more appearances.
- Total brand appearances come to 100, so your SoV is 30 divided by 100, which is 30%.
It helps to read Share of Voice alongside Visibility. Visibility tells you whether you are in the conversation at all, while SoV tells you how loud you are once you are in it. A brand with 50% visibility and 60% SoV is dominating its category, whereas a brand with 50% visibility and only 15% SoV is being mentioned but drowned out by other brands.
How to find your Share of Voice
- Open AI visibility.
- Select Overview.
- Read the Share of Voice KPI tile at the top of the page.
- Use the Share of Voice donut and the Share-of-voice leaderboard to see how it breaks down brand by brand.
Tip: track SoV over time rather than as a single snapshot, so you can see whether you are gaining or losing ground against the other brands named in the same answers.
