Why am I asked for a code when I sign in?
WriteWorks emails you a 6-digit code when you create your account and every time you sign in. Enter it on the 'Check your email for your code' screen to carry on.
Every time you sign in to WriteWorks, and once when you first create your account, we email you a 6-digit code and ask you to enter it before you can carry on. This article explains why, how to use the code, and what to do if it does not arrive.
The code proves that the person signing in can also open your inbox. A stolen or guessed password on its own is no longer enough to get into your account, your organisation or your content. When you create an account, the first code also confirms that your email address is real and belongs to you. Until it is entered, the account cannot use any part of WriteWorks.
You are asked for a fresh code on every new sign-in, whichever way you sign in: with a password, with "Continue with Google", or from a sign-in link. If your account uses two-factor authentication, you enter your authenticator code first and the emailed code second.
To enter your code
- Sign in as usual. You are taken to a screen titled "Check your email for your code", which shows the address the code was sent to.
- Open the email from WriteWorks with the subject "is your WriteWorks sign-in code" (or "confirmation code" for a new account).
- Type or paste the 6 digits into the boxes. The code is checked as soon as the last digit is in.
- You are taken straight on to the page you were heading for.
Good to know
- Each code works once and expires after 10 minutes.
- After 5 incorrect attempts a code stops working, and you need to request a new one.
- You can resend a code once a minute, up to 5 codes an hour.
- Signing out, or signing in on another browser or device, means you need a new code next time.
- If you did not try to sign in but received a code, someone may know your password. Change it from Settings, Account, Security.
- If you entered the wrong email address when signing up, click "Sign out and start again" on the code screen.
If the email does not arrive, check your spam or junk folder, wait a minute and click "resend the code". If it still does not arrive, contact WriteWorks support, who can send you a new code.
Tip: add the WriteWorks sending address to your contacts or safe senders list so sign-in codes never land in spam.
