ChatGPT SEO tools and trackers
What ChatGPT tracking tools can and cannot measure, why numbers differ between them, and what to check before trusting one.
ChatGPT SEO tools track whether and how your brand appears in ChatGPT's answers. This article explains what they measure, why two tools can report different numbers for the same brand, and how to judge which to trust.
What these tools measure
A ChatGPT tracker runs a set of prompts through ChatGPT on a schedule and records what comes back: whether your brand was named, where in the answer, whether your domain was cited, and which competitors appeared. From that it computes a mention rate and, usually, a share of voice against a competitor set.
That is the whole mechanism. There is no ranking to read, no index to query, and no API that reports visibility — the only way to know what ChatGPT says is to ask it repeatedly and record the answers.
Why tools disagree
This is the most useful thing to understand about the category, because two reputable tools can report meaningfully different numbers for the same brand on the same day.
Access method. Some tools query OpenAI's API; others automate the consumer interface. The API and the consumer product can differ in system prompt, retrieval settings, and sometimes model version, so they are genuinely different measurements rather than one being wrong.
Search on or off. ChatGPT answers some questions from memory and others by searching. Whether a tool forces browsing, disables it, or leaves it to the model changes results dramatically — these are the two separate paths to being mentioned, and blending them hides which one you are winning.
Repetition. A tool running each prompt once produces a much noisier series than one running it several times and averaging.
Mention detection. Exact string matching versus alias-aware detection produces different counts, especially for brands with abbreviations, common-word names, or a parent company.
Prompt phrasing. Small wording differences change answers substantially, so two tools with "the same" prompt set are often not measuring the same thing.
None of these make a tool bad. They make cross-tool comparison invalid, which matters if you are evaluating two products or switching between them.
What to check before trusting a tool
- Ask whether it uses the API or the interface, and whether browsing is forced, disabled, or left to the model.
- Ask the repetition count per prompt per cycle.
- Confirm raw responses are stored and readable.
- Test alias detection with a shortened form of your brand name.
- Verify one reported metric by hand.
- Include a prompt where a competitor clearly dominates, and confirm the tool reflects it.
What these tools cannot tell you
- How many real users saw an answer mentioning you. No engine publishes this, and any tool presenting an impression estimate for ChatGPT is modelling, not measuring.
- Traffic attribution. ChatGPT referrals appear in analytics only when a user clicks a link, which is a small fraction of the mentions.
- Why you are absent, unless the tool also does diagnostics. Measurement alone gives you the symptom.
Using the data well
Separate the two paths. Track a browsing-enabled set and a memory-only set, and read them as two programmes: the first responds to content and technical work within weeks, the second to reputation work over quarters. Teams that blend them into one number end up unable to explain their own results.
Common questions about ChatGPT SEO tools
- What is the best ChatGPT SEO tracker? The one whose method matches what you want to know. If you care about being retrieved when ChatGPT searches, you need a tool that forces browsing. If you care about being recommended from memory, you need one that can disable it. Most teams need both, reported separately.
- Is ChatGPT SEO a real thing? The activity is real even though the name is imprecise — there is no ranking to optimise. What you are optimising is the rate at which your brand is named and your domain cited across many runs of a question.
- Why do two ChatGPT trackers give different numbers? Different access methods, browsing settings, repetition counts, prompt phrasings, and mention detection. The numbers are not comparable across tools, and a discrepancy is not evidence either is wrong.
- Can I track ChatGPT visibility for free? You can run questions manually and record the results, which is fine for a one-off baseline. It stops being practical once you need repeated runs across many prompts over months.
- Do these tools show traffic from ChatGPT? Only what appears in your own analytics as referrals, which captures a small fraction of mentions. Most of the effect never produces a click.
- How many runs per prompt is enough? Enough that the rate stabilises — in practice several per cycle. Single runs are anecdotes.
Tip: whatever tool you use, record whether browsing was enabled for each measurement. It is the single most common reason a ChatGPT visibility number moves for reasons nobody can explain afterwards.
