What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your content used as the answer when a search or AI engine responds directly instead of returning links.
Answer engine optimization, shortened to AEO, is the practice of structuring content so that engines which answer questions directly use your material as the answer. This article covers the definition, where the term came from, how it relates to GEO, and what an AEO programme involves.
An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with a resolved answer rather than a list of documents. That definition is deliberately broad, because it covers surfaces that arrived at different times: featured snippets and knowledge panels in traditional search, voice assistants, Google AI Overviews, and conversational assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude. What unites them is that the user's question is answered on the spot.
AEO is the work of becoming that answer. In its earliest usage the term described optimising for featured snippets and voice results, which is why a lot of older AEO advice is really schema and snippet formatting advice. As generative assistants became the dominant answer surface, the term stretched to cover them too, and in current usage AEO and GEO are close to synonymous. If you want a distinction that holds up: AEO emphasises being the answer to a specific question, while generative engine optimization emphasises being a source inside a synthesised response. Most programmes need both, and the tactics are largely shared.
Why the shift matters
The commercial consequence of answer engines is that a growing share of searches end without a click. The user gets what they needed from the answer itself. For publishers who monetise sessions this is straightforwardly bad. For brands selling a product or service it is more subtle: the click is lost, but being named as the recommended option in the answer is often worth more than the visit would have been.
That reframes the goal. You are no longer trying to win a visit; you are trying to be present at the moment the decision narrows. The measurable version of that is how often your brand is named across the questions your buyers ask.
What AEO work looks like
- Write to the question. Each page or section should map to a real question, use that question as the heading, and answer it in the first two sentences.
- Keep answers self-contained. An answer that only makes sense after reading the previous section cannot be lifted cleanly.
- Use structured data where it applies. FAQ, HowTo, Product, and Organization markup help engines understand what a page asserts and who is asserting it. Schema alone does not win answers, but it removes ambiguity.
- Front-load the facts. Numbers, definitions, prices, steps, and comparisons should appear near the top of the relevant section rather than at the end of a narrative.
- Match the expected answer format. Questions that want a list should be answered with a list; questions that want a definition should be answered with one sentence and then expanded.
- Maintain accuracy and freshness. Answer engines quietly stop using sources that contradict the consensus of other sources, and prefer recent pages for anything time-sensitive.
How to run an AEO programme
- Collect the questions your buyers actually ask, from sales calls, support tickets, and the search queries already reaching your site.
- Group them into clusters where one page can credibly answer the whole cluster, rather than making a thin page per phrasing.
- Check the current answer for each question across the engines that matter to you, and note who is being used as the source.
- Rewrite or create the page so the question appears as a heading and the answer appears immediately beneath it.
- Add the structured data that genuinely applies, and no more.
- Re-check the answers on a fixed cadence and track how often you are the cited source.
A common mistake is treating AEO as a formatting exercise applied to existing marketing copy. Answer engines are unusually good at detecting content that circles a question without resolving it. Pages that commit to a clear, specific, occasionally unflattering answer get used; pages that hedge do not.
Common questions about AEO
- What is the AEO definition in one sentence? Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring content so that engines answering questions directly use your material as the answer.
- What is AEO in marketing terms? It is the discipline of being present at the moment a buyer's question gets resolved, on surfaces where there is no results page to rank on and often no click to win.
- Is AEO the same as optimising for featured snippets? Featured snippets were the original AEO surface and the tactics still apply, but the term now covers AI Overviews and conversational assistants too. The shared requirement is a direct, self-contained answer under a clear question.
- Does AEO require schema markup? It helps engines understand what a page asserts and removes ambiguity, but it does not by itself win answers. Providers who present schema as the primary mechanism are overselling it.
- How is AEO measured? By whether you are the answer: the share of tracked questions where your content is used or your brand is named, per surface, tracked over repeated checks.
- Will answering fully cost me traffic? On simple informational questions, sometimes yes. The alternative is worse — the engine answers using a competitor's page and names them instead. Keep what an answer cannot replicate behind the click.
Tip: the fastest AEO win in most accounts is not new content. It is taking pages that already rank, finding the buried answer in paragraph six, and moving it directly under a heading that states the question.
