How do I publish to my CMS?
Connect WordPress, Webflow, Contentful, Sanity or Notion in Settings → Integrations, then use the editor's Publish menu to preview and send a draft or publish it live.
You can send finished content straight from the WriteWorks editor to WordPress, Webflow, Contentful, Sanity or Notion. WriteWorks converts your draft into each CMS's own format, including headings, links, lists, quotes, code, images with captions and tables, and shows you a preview before anything is sent. This article explains how to connect a CMS and publish.
First, connect your CMS in Settings → Integrations. WordPress needs your site URL, username and an application password (from Users → Profile → Application Passwords in WordPress, not your login password). Sanity needs a project ID and dataset. Webflow, Contentful and Notion connect by signing in. Once someone on your team has connected a CMS, it appears in the editor's Publish menu.
How to publish from the editor
- Open the draft in Create → Editor. If it is new, save it first, as you can only publish a saved draft.
- Click Publish in the toolbar. The menu lists your connected CMSs under Publish to, and shows where this content is already published, marked Published or Draft.
- Choose a CMS. On the Destination step, pick where it goes, such as the site, collection, content type or post type, and check the Title, URL slug and Excerpt or Summary. A blank excerpt uses the opening paragraph.
- Click Preview to see how it will look, its structure and anything the CMS cannot hold exactly, such as tables in Webflow, which become lists.
- Click Continue, then choose Save as draft or Publish live. Notion has a single Publish button.
- When it is done, use View or View live to open it in your CMS.
Things to know
- Republishing to the same destination updates the same item rather than creating a new one. In Notion, the previous version is archived and replaced.
- If you choose a different destination, WriteWorks creates a new item.
- Images are uploaded into WordPress, Contentful and Sanity for you.
- If your role can save drafts but not publish live, Publish live is refused. Save it as a draft, or ask an editor or admin to publish it.
- Payload, BaseHub and Framer appear in the menu but cannot be published to yet, and the menu explains why.
Tip: save to your CMS as a draft first and check it in your CMS's own preview before you publish live.
