How to rank in ChatGPT
ChatGPT has no rankings. What it has is retrieval — and getting into the pages it retrieves and quotes is a specific, addressable job.
There is no ranking in ChatGPT, and starting from that fact makes the work much clearer. This article explains what actually determines whether ChatGPT surfaces your brand when it searches, and what to change to improve your odds.
What happens when ChatGPT answers
When ChatGPT responds to a question that needs current information, it searches. It rewrites the user's question into one or more search queries, retrieves results, fetches and reads some of those pages, and writes an answer citing the ones it used. There is no ordered list and no position — a page is either read and used, or it is not.
When the question does not require current information, ChatGPT may answer from what the model already knows, without searching at all. That path is covered separately, because the levers are entirely different.
This article is about the search path, which is the faster one to influence.
The three gates
A page has to pass three gates to end up in a ChatGPT answer.
Gate one is being surfaced by the search. ChatGPT's retrieval runs through a search index, so pages that are not indexed and reasonably relevant for the rewritten query are never candidates. Conventional SEO fundamentals decide this gate entirely.
Gate two is being fetchable. Once a URL is selected, it has to be fetched and parsed. This is where a surprising number of sites fail: content that only appears after JavaScript execution, bot protection that challenges non-browser agents, robots rules blocking OAI-SearchBot, and slow responses all cause a page to be dropped at this stage even though it was selected.
Gate three is being useful once read. Given the page's text, the model has to find a passage that answers the question well enough to quote or paraphrase with attribution. This is where structure and specificity decide the outcome.
What to actually do
- Confirm the page is indexed and relevant for the way the question would be rewritten as a search query — usually a more literal, keyword-shaped version of the user's phrasing.
- Check your robots.txt. OAI-SearchBot is the crawler used for search retrieval, and it is separate from GPTBot, which is used for training. Blocking the wrong one is a common and costly mistake.
- Verify the content is in the raw HTML. Fetch the page without JavaScript and confirm the substance is there.
- Check bot protection. Firewalls that challenge unfamiliar user agents will silently remove you from retrieval.
- Put the answer in the first two sentences under a heading that states the question. Extraction takes chunks; a chunk that opens with the answer is usable, one that opens with a preamble is not.
- Add specifics — figures, dates, versions, named methods. Specific claims get attributed to a source; generic ones get absorbed into the model's own prose.
- Cover the adjacent questions on the same page or in the same cluster, because one user question becomes several search queries.
- Keep the page current. Recency visibly matters for anything that could have changed.
What does not work
- Repeating your brand name throughout the page. Mention frequency on your own site does not drive citation.
- Schema markup alone. It helps engines interpret a page and does not by itself win a citation.
- Buying placement. No such product exists for ChatGPT's answers.
- Optimising a single page in isolation. Retrieval selects across the whole cluster of rewritten queries, so coverage matters more than any individual page.
How to measure it
Ask the question repeatedly rather than once, because the answer varies between runs. Record whether your brand appears, whether your domain is cited, and which other domains are used. Do this on a fixed schedule against a fixed set of questions and read the trend, not the individual result.
Common questions about ranking in ChatGPT
- How do I rank higher in ChatGPT? There is no higher — there is no ordered list. What you can improve is the rate at which your brand is named across many runs of a question, and the likelihood your domain is cited. Both are measured as rates, not positions.
- How do I show up in ChatGPT search specifically? Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, serve content in raw HTML, stay indexed in conventional search, and put a direct answer under a question-shaped heading. Those four cover most of the gap for most sites.
- Why does ChatGPT mention my competitor and not me? Usually one of three things: they are retrievable and you are not, their page answers the question in an extractable way and yours buries it, or the model has a stronger learned association with their brand. The browsing on/off test tells you which.
- Does it help to mention my brand name more on my own pages? No. Mention frequency on your own site does not drive citation, and it reads badly to humans.
- How often should I check? Weekly, across repeated runs of a fixed question set. Single checks are anecdotes because answers vary between runs.
- Does ChatGPT send traffic? Only when a user clicks a cited link, which is a minority of mentions. Most of the value is influence on the shortlist rather than sessions in your analytics.
Tip: check whether ChatGPT can fetch your page at all before optimising anything else. Ask it directly to read a specific URL of yours and summarise it — if it cannot, or returns something generic, you have found the problem, and no amount of content work will fix it.
