What are AI tokens?
AI tokens measure the AI work you ask for. Your plan includes a monthly allowance, and you can buy one-off token packs that are used automatically once it runs out.
AI tokens are how WriteWorks measures AI usage. Every plan includes a monthly allowance, and you can buy extra tokens so your work is not blocked when you reach it. This article explains what counts, how admins can share tokens out and how to top up.
Whenever you ask the AI for something, such as writing or editing in the editor, generating a brief, running a workflow or agent, or chatting in Ask AI, the work is measured in tokens. A token is a small chunk of text the AI reads or writes, so what you use depends on the size of the job, not the number of clicks. A one-line rewrite uses very little, while a long article or a multi-step agent run uses far more. In Ask AI, more capable models use tokens faster than lighter ones, and each reply shows how many tokens it used.
Scheduled visibility sweeps across your tracked prompts are included in your plan and never count towards your tokens.
Your plan's allowance resets at the start of each month. When it is spent, WriteWorks automatically switches to any tokens you have bought and keeps going. If both run out, AI actions pause and you are asked to buy more tokens or upgrade. Nothing you were working on is lost.
Admins who manage billing can also give a member a personal monthly allocation on the Members page. That allocation is a hard cap for that person, even if the organisation still has tokens left. Members without one draw from the shared organisation pool.
Token packs are one-off purchases in three sizes: Starter pack (2M tokens), Growth pack (8M tokens) and Scale pack (40M tokens). Bigger packs give you a better rate per token.
How to buy AI tokens
- Open Settings, then Billing.
- Scroll to Add-ons and find the AI tokens section, which also shows your current purchased balance.
- Choose a pack. Each one shows its price and its cost per million tokens.
- Click "Buy tokens" and complete the secure checkout. The tokens appear in your balance within a few seconds.
You can check your tokens at any time
- The token meter in the header shows tokens left, tokens used this month and your purchased balance.
- The Usage page shows your monthly use and a six-month trend.
Tip: if you regularly run out before the month ends, compare the cost of packs with moving up a tier on the Plans page.
