AI SEO services: what they include and what to ask for

What an AI SEO engagement typically covers, how to tell a substantive offering from a repackaged one, and the deliverables worth insisting on.

AI SEO services are sold by agencies, consultancies, and freelancers, and the scope varies enormously between them. This article sets out what a substantive engagement contains, how to spot a repackaged traditional service, and what to specify in a brief.

What the service should cover

A credible AI SEO engagement addresses both meanings of the term: using AI to do the work efficiently, and optimising for AI-mediated search surfaces. A provider that only does one and charges for both is worth questioning.

On the AI search side, expect

  • A prompt set built from your buyers' real questions, not generated from keyword volume.
  • A measured baseline of your brand's mention rate across the engines your buyers use, with competitors measured on the same prompts.
  • A retrievability audit covering crawlability, server-side rendering, AI crawler access, and bot protection behaviour.
  • A content gap analysis identifying the questions where competitors are cited and you are absent.
  • Restructuring of priority existing pages for extraction, before any new content is commissioned.
  • An off-site plan covering the third-party sources that shape how models describe you.

On the AI-assisted side, expect

  • Intent clustering and page mapping across your full query set.
  • Content briefs that specify the question, the answer, and the evidence required.
  • A stated editorial process including fact-checking and subject-matter review.
  • Technical work informed by crawl and log analysis.

How to spot a repackaged service

Some offerings are traditional SEO with new vocabulary. Reliable indicators.

  • The deliverables are rankings reports with an AI section appended, and there is no measurement of brand mentions in generated answers.
  • Schema markup is presented as the primary mechanism for winning AI answers. Schema helps engines understand a page; it does not by itself decide citations.
  • The proposal promises guaranteed placement in AI answers or a specific visibility score. Neither is purchasable.
  • Content volume is the headline deliverable. Number of articles per month is an input, not an outcome, and in AI-mediated search it is a particularly weak one.
  • There is no baseline measurement before work starts, which makes it impossible to demonstrate progress afterwards.

What to specify in your brief

  1. Ask for a baseline measurement in the first two weeks, including the prompt set and the competitor set, and require that both be documented and frozen.
  2. Require raw evidence — the actual engine responses — to sit behind any reported metric.
  3. Ask which engines will be measured and how often, and reject a blended single score with no per-engine breakdown.
  4. Specify that the retrievability audit happens before content commissioning.
  5. Ask what portion of the fee is content production versus analysis, since the balance tells you what you are really buying.
  6. Require that all prompt sets, briefs, and data are yours and exportable at the end of the engagement.

Reasonable expectations on timing

Retrieval-driven changes can appear within weeks of pages being recrawled. Shifts in how a model describes your brand from memory take months and depend on the wider web, not only on your site. Any provider promising a transformed AI presence in the first month is either measuring something trivial or overstating.

A fair engagement typically shows measurable movement on the retrieval side in six to twelve weeks, with the off-site work compounding over two to three quarters.

Common questions about AI SEO services

  • What is included in a typical AI SEO service? Measurement of your presence in AI answers, a retrievability audit, intent clustering and page mapping, content briefing and production, and off-site work on the sources that describe you. Providers covering only the last two are selling content marketing.
  • How much do AI SEO services cost? The dominant variable is content volume. An audit-and-measurement engagement is a fraction of a full production retainer, so ask for the split before comparing quotes.
  • Should I use a specialist or my existing SEO provider? Whoever can demonstrate the measurement capability. Many established agencies have built it; some have relabelled existing services. The test is whether they can show you a documented prompt set and stored engine responses.
  • How long should I commit? Three months is the shortest period in which retrieval-side movement becomes legible, and it makes a sensible first review point.
  • What deliverables should I insist on? A frozen, documented baseline in the first month; raw engine responses behind every metric; per-engine reporting; and full ownership of prompts, data, and briefs.
  • Can I do this in-house instead? The measurement half is largely tooling and process and is very feasible internally. The off-site half depends on outreach capacity, which is where agencies earn their fee.

Tip: ask a prospective provider to run five of your buying questions through two engines before the pitch, and to bring the answers. How they interpret what comes back tells you more about their competence than any case study.
